- A dimension on a drawing is two things at once: a size, and a statement of how much that size may vary from part to part. A reader who takes only the first has half of it.Every tolerance can be turned into two numbers, the largest and the smallest the feature may be. Once a reader can do that, everything else in this book follows from arithmetic: the fits between a hole and a shaft, the way tolerances add along a chain, and the scale that turns a drawn length into a real one.The drawing is the record. An ordinary untoleranced size takes the applicable general tolerance when the drawing's notes or standard make that general tolerance applicable to it. It does not design a part, choose a tolerance, select a standard fit from a table, or say whether a size suits a service.
